As far as the amount of ice needed, we used a full container of ice from our automatic ice-maker in our freezer. You can't find better for the money than this ice cream maker, I'm sure. We chose to buy this Hamilton Beach ice cream maker because we recently bought an inexpensive ($30) Hamilton Beach food processor on amazon, which we're satisfied with. We made raspberry frozen custard for our first batch in the ice cream maker. The container the ice cream churns in is adequate to store in the freezer when the ice cream is done. But it only took 30 minutes to finish, so that's not long at all. It was very easy to use.
It was better than the frozen custard I grew up with. The custard was soft and creamy when done.
The noise is loud, so loud that it's hard to hear the TV. It wasn't necessary.
My husband said this ice cream maker is the best $31.99 we ever spent. We didn't add any additional ice during the 1/2 hour it took to finish.
It makes a large quantity, too (4 qts/1 gallon). We used the base recipe for frozen custard in the little included recipe book, but cut it in half and added fresh raspberries.
The parts of the machine are pretty cheap plastic and the freezer container a thin aluminum, but we are happy with it for our uses.
It is a bit noisy, but we don't mind because we use it outside on the porch. This is a great ice cream maker. Large capacity and quick working.
I was a bit leery. We made 2 batches yesterday and they tasted GREAT. THis product is AMAZING. Low and behold it works GREAT. Definately purchase. I researched and researched ice cream makers and found this lovely item. Being so cheap- and a 4qt (much larger than the others).
You can't go wrong with this ice cream maker. Absolutely love the quality of this product, especially for under $35. This makes awesome ice cream. Creamy, and perfect ice cream in 30-40 minutes.
My kids and husband love it, too. I spent very little compared to other ice cream makers. The Hamilton Beach is just the right size, is simple to use and makes great ice cream.
